Susie Emmert has been named Vice President and Chief Advocacy Officer for Saint Paul-based Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS), which is among the largest human service organizations statewide. Emmert will oversee state and national advocacy initiatives for the organization to improve services and public policies that support full and abundant lives for all Minnesotans.

Tonia Brinston, financial educator for LSS Financial Counseling, received an award as one of the Top Women in Finance by Finance & Commerce Newspaper on November 15. Brinston, based in Minneapolis, was recognized at an awards dinner attended by more than 450 people at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis. Each year, this award recognizes 45 outstanding women who make notable contributions to their professions and communities.

The Hometown Focus highlighted Minnesota Service CORE, which is celebrating a decade of supporting Minnesota veterans and strengthening military families. CORE, which stands for counseling and case management, outreach, referral and education, is dedicated to strengthening service members, veterans and their families by providing access to care for mental and behavioral health, employment, housing and financial counseling. The CORE program is a partnership between the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) and Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS).

If there is a crisis after normal work hours, she tends to it. Chad Larimer, and LSS Financial Counselor, hopes to be a “light at the end of a tunnel, not a train” for the people he supports!

Camp Noah, a Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota week-long day camp to help children recover emotionally and spiritually from natural disasters, provided support to children who fled to Pennsylvania after the devastation created by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
