Deaf and Hard of Hearing Guide
Shelby Geldon

Shelby is a Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Guide at MNH&V. She started as a DHH Guide in the summer of 2019. In 2022, she was involved in creating the Fostering Joy Journal for DHH kids. Over the years she has attended numerous DHH Guide visits with families and attended MNH&V events to be a source of support for families and children who are DHH like her. Shelby enjoys helping families navigate their DHH journey and shedding light on her experience growing up as a DHH person. Shelby grew up 45 minutes north of the Twin Cities. As the only Hard of Hearing person in her family, she did not have anyone to ask questions to or help navigate life as a DHH person. In her school, she did not have any other DHH students in her class but had met a few within the school district so her experience of socializing with other DHH individuals was limited. In college, Shelby started learning ASL and attending events where there were a lot of DHH people. She enjoys attending events that are accessible to DHH people such as open captioned events or events with an ASL interpreter.

Shelby now lives just east of St. Paul and attends school at the University of Minnesota. She is in her last year of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher program. In her free time, Shelby enjoys hiking, dancing, learning new things, and reading.
