Parent Mentor - LSS
Young Parent Program
Population Served: Children/ Youth, Families
Type
of Opportunity: The Young Parent Program is for
young women and men who are expecting a baby or have children
up to preschool age. Individuals who serve as Parent Mentors
meet with their assigned parent(s) three times a month to
offer encouragement, information, support, and positive role
modeling. This volunteer opportunity is available in Duluth.
Opportunity Description: Mentors are in weekly
contact with assigned parent(s) and meet three times monthly.
Desired skills include an ability to form positive, supportive
relationships, a basic understanding of mental health issues,
sensitivity to lifestyle differences, experience working with
young children and a desire to support others as they develop
personally and as parents. Mentors maintain records of their
visits and maintain contact with the program manager. Training
Provided.
Time
Commitment:
A minimum of one year
in the mentoring program meeting with assigned parents three
times monthly 1-1.5 hours each meeting and contacting the
assigned parent(s) weekly.
