LSS Refugee Services:
Overseas Resettlement Information
The United States Government, through a collaborative effort of several of its agencies as well as Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), offers refugees from around the world the opportunity to resettle to the United States. Currently, refugees may be considered for resettlement in one of the following categories:
Priority 1 - Individual Referrals: This category is open to any refugee from any part of the world who is referred to the program by UNHCR, a U.S. embassy or certain NGOs.
Priority 2 - Group Referrals: This category includes groups of refugees identified by the U.S. Department of State as in need of resettlement.
Priority 3 - Family Reunification: Refugees from certain nationalities, as determined by the President of the United States, may qualify for this category. Refugees are filed for by family members already living in the United States.
I-730/Visa 93 - Following-to-Join Petitions: Within two years of arrival in the United States, a refugee may file for his/her spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21.
