Camp Knutson Celebrates 50th Anniversary Renovated and Expanded to Serve
Another 50 Years
Five years ago, Rob Larson,
Director of Camp Knutson, Rob Lane (former Camp Co-Director), and their
boss, Bob York, shared with the LSS Board of Directors a dream for Aug.
23, 2003. That vision included a completely renovated camp, with some
expanded facilities to better serve the special needs children and their
families who are the primary users of Camp Knutson. The plan was to find
and invite Congressman Harold Knutson's family to this special 50-year
anniversary that marks the date the congressman gave his lake home to the
Evangelical Lutheran Church to provide a camp for underprivileged
children.
On Aug. 23, 2003, Larson, Lane
and York agreed that their dream was realized in bigger and better ways
than they had originally thought possible. And they went on to say that
Congressman Knutson, too, would never have imagined the world-class camp
that his gift made possible.
Jerry and Sandy Bilski,
co-chairs of the Camp Knutson Rebuilding for Good Campaign, shared with
crowds assembled on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 22-23, that 14 buildings had
been newly built or completely remodeled. The buildings are bigger and
better than originally planned. The campaign has less than $100,000
remaining to be raised so that all construction will be paid for.
An endowment campaign was
announced on August 23, seeking $1,000 yearly from individuals, families,
churches, organizations and businesses. The campaign, called "Friends of
Camp Knutson" asks for endowment support so that the camp's facilities and
operations will be assured for the long term.
