Phillips Park Building Program Continues

Across the street from the Oakland Avenue entrance to LSS' Minneapolis Service Center at 2414 Park Avenue, crews are moving quickly on the construction of 12 new, three-bedroom town homes. As part of the LSS Housing First program, these town homes, owned by LSS and sponsored by the Phillips Park Initiative, will offer permanent housing to families who are moving from welfare to self-sufficiency.

The town homes are subsidized housing units and will provide permanent housing for the parents and children who will reside in these units. This type of housing is called "service enriched housing," since there will be access to supportive help for those families who need it. These services may include rental and employment skills, as well as family and parenting skills. The development is modeled after a concept called Housing First, meaning that families can become stable and functional only when they have permanent housing; a permanent place to live becomes the first priority.

The first families are expected to move into the town home units in December 2003.
