Message From The President |
|
Some of our most inspiring,
real-world role models are not on the cover of magazines at the check-out
counter. Interestingly, these inspirational people are often in our very
own congregations - or within our staff. In fact, they are you.
We are celebrating our 140th anniversary this year. But it's more
than just a sentimental journey down memory lane. Rather, it's an
opportunity to recall and recommit ourselves to important life lessons
that our church founders put into practice many years ago.

From a Single Event in 1865... |
|
"In the fall of 1865, when I
made a visit to St. Paul, I was notified that a family from Dalarna
(Sweden), Mikola Erik Erikson and his wife, had recently come from Sweden,
and both had died and left four children in a destitute and defenseless
position. Asked, if I had any advice regarding these children, it was as
if a voice said to me: take them home with you. And I took them home to
Red Wing, where I lived then. The following Sunday, I took the children
with me to church service … and it was obvious that they needed care,
clothes, and food. The congregation was immediately ready to take up a
collection for this purpose..." Click

Employees Look into the Future |
|
When Pastor Eric Norelius and
his congregation decided to care for a family of four orphaned children
in1865, there is no way they could have predicted what their act of mercy
would spark. Back then, the idea of "works of mercy" was brand new. Social
work as a profession didn't exist. The idea of
an organization with the size and capability of LSS would have been
unimaginable.

Special 140th Year Tribute to Lutheran Social
Service Auxiliaries |
From the
very beginning of what is now LSS, women have played a critical role -
as professionals on the staff as well as highly-skilled volunteers and
advocates. As LSS approached its 140th Anniversary, leadership of the
Lutheran Social Service Auxiliary (LSSA) decided to look through the
records and publish a retrospective account of certain women and their
contributions to LSS over the years. This book, The First to Serve:
Women of Lutheran Social Service, is that result of that decision. Click
