Consider the Difference You Can Make in the Life of a Child

Thousands of children in Minnesota need a champion when they are removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or other family crises. We invite you to join us in caring for these children.

Becoming a foster parent means offering hope to children in need by providing a secure and supportive home where they can live, grow and thrive.

LSS provides guidance through the licensing process, as well as robust training and support for foster parents.

In the midst of COVID-19, we are taking every precaution to keep families and youth safe while continuing to license new foster families. Information sessions and many trainings are available online.

What You Need to be an LSS Foster Parent

  • Have love for children, patience, and parenting skills
  • An openness to learn about the impact of trauma and separation on youth
  • Be age 21 or older
  • Be physically able to care for children
  • Have flexible enough work schedule to care for a child’s needs
  • Have stable housing which can meet licensing requirements, that you own or rent

To protect the health and safety of children, individuals living in the home who are 13 years of age or older must complete a background study. License applicants and adult household members are required to complete a fingerprint-based background study.

Role of the Foster Parent

You may have the unique opportunity to give a child a chance to thrive. Welcoming a child into your home will likely introduce you to a variety of new responsibilities. LSS is with you every step of the way.

Licensing Requirements

To ensure the safety and well-being of children we support, LSS requires foster homes to obtain a license from the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) prior to placing a child. We will work closely with you to guide you through the licensing process.

Foster Parenting Options

At LSS, there are several options for both short-and long-term fostering of a child in transition. Find the right fit for you.

Read how the Erickson family took the leap and became foster parents. Kelly Erickson asks, “What do your perceived roadblocks look like? Are they actual roadblocks or are they minor speed bumps? Why not change the world for kids who need a safe, stable and loving home?  Take the leap and get more information. You never know where it might take you.”

Support & Training for Foster Parents

As a therapeutic foster parent for Lutheran Social Service you are not alone. We are committed to being highly responsive and supporting foster families to ensure a positive and healthy environment for your family and the foster children in your home.
