Group Homes

Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota has roots dating back to 1865 when a young Swedish pastor and his pioneer congregation opened their hearts to a family of four orphaned immigrant children and began the first Lutheran social ministry in Minnesota called Vasa Lutheran Home for children near Red Wing, MN. In the 1990’s, LSS continues to be the church in service, at the cutting edge of serving children and families.

Throughout Minnesota, we have licensed group homes and shelters which offer a secure, supportive and safe environment for children who are experiencing difficulties at home, in school, or in the community. They are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The staff are well educated and very committed to their work with children in crisis. We encourage qualified persons to seek employment opportunities at LSS.

The program includes individual counseling, support groups, family counseling, recreational activities and crafts, and assessment/evaluations as well as attention to academics through local schools or one-on-one tutors. Community involvement and volunteer work are encouraged to promote a sense of belonging and well-being by contributing to others.

Our group homes are funded through federal, state and local governments, the United Way, church donations and private contributions. Although we appreciate the financial assistance from these funders, it is not always adequate to support our programs. Any contributions we receive are needed and appreciated.
