LSS Employment Services:
Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP)
The Minnesota Family Investment Program, or MFIP, is the state’s Federally funded welfare reform program for low-income families with children. MFIP employment counselors help families move to work. The MFIP programs include both cash and food assistance. When most families apply for cash assistance, they must first participate in the Diversionary Work Program, or DWP. This four month program helps parents go immediately to work. If participants are unable to find employment during these four months in DWP, then the participants’ cases are referred to the MFIP employment services.
