Set an example. Maintain a healthy lifestyle during stressful times with plenty of sleep, exercise, and healthy food if possible. Explain to a child what is happening. Assure your children that they arent to blame, and that you will handle the situation. Keep communications open. Tell family members and friends that you are dealing with the problem, and ask you if they have questions or concerns. Keep issues separate. When in a crisis, try to separate problems or issues to better deal with them and find solutions. Dont take out your frustrations on a child. Seek assistance. Getting expert help is smart. Too often were so close to a situation we cant see other options or choices on how to deal effectively with the problem. Take time out. Dont run yourself down with negative messages. Give yourself credit for being a good parent. Recognize when you need to take a break from being a parentor your childs sake.
