Healthy Parenting Checklist for stressful situations:

Set an example. Maintain a healthy lifestyle during stressful times with plenty of sleep, exercise, and healthy food if possible.

Explain to a child what is happening. Assure your children that they aren’t to blame, and that you will handle the situation.

Keep communications open. Tell family members and friends that you are dealing with the problem, and ask you if they have questions or concerns.

Keep issues separate. When in a crisis, try to separate problems or issues to better deal with them and find solutions. Don’t take out your frustrations on a child.

Seek assistance. Getting expert help is smart. Too often we’re so close to a situation we can’t see other options or choices on how to deal effectively with the problem.

Take time out. Don’t run yourself down with negative messages. Give yourself credit for being a good parent. Recognize when you need to take a break from being a parent—or your child’s sake.

Crisis Nurseries
24-hour family support service that includes a crisis line, emergency daycare and overnight care

Parents need support to be effective caregivers and provide a safe and nurturing environment for children to grow into healthy adults. Parents, who are dealing with emergencies or crises such as sudden illness, housing problems, divorce or separation, or financial strains, may need time alone to resolve the crisis.

If you are facing a crisis, and need help managing your children, consider the LSS Crisis Nursery—available in Mankato, Duluth and St. Cloud. The legal guardian or parent can request the emergency day and night care for up to three days, by calling a 24-hour crisis hotline.

Trained staff also provides referrals, counseling and support, as well as supplies in emergency situations. Children from 0-12 years of age are eligible for Crisis Nursery care.
