Loss is an inevitable part of life, and grief is a natural part of the healing process. Grieving is like a journey, not knowing exactly where or when it will end, and trying to find the best path.

To schedule an appointment, call 888.881.8261

The reasons for grief can vary, such as the loss of a loved one, the loss of health, or the breakup of a deep relationship.

Some examples include:

  • Illness/loss of health
  • Death of a pet
  • Change of job
  • Move to a new home
  • Loss of a employment or financial security

Regardless of the cause, the LSS Counseling team can assist and support you to process your feelings, manage your reactions and cope with symptoms you may be experiencing.

Symptoms

Your symptoms when grieving may depend on the type of loss, or even your preparation for the loss itself.

Sudden or shocking losses due to events like crimes, accidents, or suicide can be traumatic. There is no way to prepare. They can challenge your sense of security and confidence in the predictability of life.

You may experience symptoms such as sleep disturbance, nightmares, distressing thoughts, depressed mood, social isolation, or severe anxiety.

Other losses, like watching a loved one suffer or die with an illness may trigger a different type of grieving and can produce emotions of guilt, abandonment, and questioning one’s existence or purpose.  When experiencing grief, it is common to:

  • Feel like you are "out of it"
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feel sad, depressed or hopeless
  • Be irritable or angry
  • Feel fatigued or heavy hearted
  • Experience anxiety, nervousness, or fearfulness
  • Feel like you want to "escape"
  • Experience guilt or remorse
  • Be ambivalent and numb
  • Lack energy and motivation

Treatment

Dealing with a significant loss can be one of the most difficult times in a person's life. Feelings of loss are very personal, and only you know what is significant to you. People commonly associate certain losses with strong feelings of grief. Subtle or less obvious losses can also cause strong feelings of grief, even though those around you may not know the extent of your feelings.

Your counselor will help you cope and will form a plan that provides you with supportive options to assist you along your grieving journey.
