Recent LSS communications with our congressional delegation:
Charitable
Giving Tax Relief Act
This letter was delivered on March 28, 2000 to Congressman Jim Ramstad and other members
of the U.S. House who had agreed to become co-sponsors of HR 1310, The Charitable Giving
Tax Relief Act. An appropriately amended version asking his support was sent to
Congressman Gil Gutknecht who, as of the date of the letter, had not signed on as a
co-sponsor of the legislation.

Hmong
Veterans Naturalization Act
This letter was sent March 28, 2000 to Congressman Jim Oberstar and the other members of
the U.S. House who had agreed to become co-sponsors of HR 371 (S. 890), The Hmong
Veterans' Naturalization Act. An appropriately amended version asking their support was
sent to Congressman Gil Gutknecht and Sen. Rod Grams who, as of the date of the letter,
had not signed on as co-sponsors of the legislation. Another apropriately amended version
was also sent to Congressman Henry Hyde (R-IL), Chair, House Judiciary Committee; the
Judiciary Committee has jurisdiction over the bill.

Liberian
Refugee Immigration Fairness Act of 1999
This letter was delivered on March 28, 2000 to U.S. Senators Paul Wellstone and Rod Grams.
Copies were also sent to the other members of the Minnesota congressional delegation;
Ralston H. Deffenbaugh, President, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services; Elizabeth
Hayes, Director, Refugee Resettlement, LSS of Minnesota; The Rev. H. George Anderson,
Bishop, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and to the bishop of each Minnesota
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Synod; and to Joanne Negstad, Executive Director,
Lutheran Services in America.

This letter, expressing the concern of the agency as the Congress entered into the
budgeting cycle for Federal Fiscal Year 2001, was delivered on March 28, 2000 to each
member of the Minnesota congressional delegation.
