The Need and Vision

Each year, LSS of MN provides services to more than 880 young people experiencing homelessness in the greater Duluth area, making thousands of contacts and providing youth with the resources they need to launch into productive, healthy, and independent lives. Most are not homeless by choice. Circumstances put them at risk of dropping out of school, unemployment, chemical dependency, sex trafficking, and an adult life of homelessness.

LSS has pledged to end youth homelessness in Duluth, and nine years ago we created a plan to do just that. We recognized that services for young people in the area were spread around the city and difficult to access. Following nearly a decade of fundraising and planning, The Center for Changing Lives Duluth opened its doors in June 2017. It is a safe, central site where young people who are at-risk or experiencing homelessness can find holistic guidance and support.

LSS serves youth right where they are: at the Center for Changing Lives and through a wide variety of community initiatives at schools, through street outreach, host homes, emergency shelter, and Safe Place locations. All of our services are designed to help youth find stable housing, learn life skills, succeed in school, gain employment, and reunite with their families when that is possible.

We are currently seeking 500 ideas to end youth homelessness - new ways to collaborate across sectors with individuals, organizations, and community partners. This community brainstorming process kicked-off at the opening of the Center for Changing Lives in Duluth and continues today. Share your ideas

The Center

The Center is 27,000 square feet and contains offices, meeting spaces and housing for youth. The first floor contains offices and meeting spaces. The second and third floors feature housing and community living spaces, along with additional offices for LSS staff. The building is ideally located near a bus line, pharmacy, grocery store, and employment opportunities and was constructed using Minnesota Green Communities Standards.

At the center, we offer a range of wellness services, life-skills training, educational support, youth groups, job skill development/mentoring and, for some, short - and long-term housing. Learn more about services.

Donors, organizational partners, and other generous supporters across Minnesota were essential in bringing this project to life. Nearly half of the fundraising for the construction of the $9.1 million project was contributed by the community through individuals, businesses, churches, and foundations. Minnesota Housing provided $4.2 million and federal grants allocated through the City of Duluth provided the remaining $400,000.

We are grateful to everyone who helped make the Center for Changing Lives Duluth a reality.
