Caregiver Respite AmeriCorps

Give back and receive as a volunteer

Today, Minnesota is aging like never before. This means that the number of people stepping into caregiver roles to ensure the health and well-being of older adults is climbing, too.

LSS is looking for caring volunteers in parts of rural Minnesota to protect caregivers from burnout. AmeriCorps volunteers visit older adults at their homes and in the community for a few hours each week. This allows exhausted family caregivers to take a well-deserved break to run errands, or rest and recharge. Helping to care for the caregiver has a direct positive impact on the lives of older adults. By giving a few hours of your time each week, you can change lives and have a positive impact on your community. Thanks to financial support from AmeriCorps, volunteers who contribute approximately ten hours a week (450 hours per year) for a year can qualify for a monthy living allowance.*

Benefits for volunteers include:

  • Monthly $200 living allowance
  • Qualify for a $1,500+ education grant award after 450 hours of service
    • Can be used for a volunteer’s own education or to pay off student loans
    • If you are 55+, your education grant can be gifted to a child
