Careers at Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS)

The following are brief descriptions of some of our most often hired for positions. Benefit eligibility thresholds vary by job. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Duties depend on the business needs at time of hire. Many positions require a background check, a valid driver’s license, and computer skills, to include Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn job related databases. For some positions, internships are available. These Descriptions describe the primary responsibilities and do not represent all positions.

In addition to skills needed for hire into a position at LSS, we also look for persons who demonstrate the special competencies identified as being necessary for success. These core competencies are Organizing and Work Productivity, Problem Solving and Judgment, Initiative and Resourcefulness, Interpersonal effectiveness, Communication Skills, Responsibility and Adaptability and Working Integrity. Management positions require additional competencies.

Adoption Worker Adoption Workers counsel couples through each stage of the adoption process, whether it is Domestic, International, or Special Needs. Adoption Workers also offer Pregnancy and Birth Parent Services and deal with all parties in the “Adoption Triad” in Post Adoption Services. Requirements: Adoption Workers require a Bachelors Degree in Human Services, some positions require a Masters in Social Work and/or a Social Work License.

Conservator Description: A court appointed Conservator ensures personal care and provides financial management to vulnerable adults. Conservators coordinate services to ensure proper case management, making informed decisions regarding matters such as proper living arrangements and medical needs. Requirements: BA degree in Human Services or other relevant field, or four years experience in a related field, with similar clients and decision making responsibilities.

Consumer Credit Counselor Advise clients on a variety of financial matters such as debt management, budget and housing counseling (including foreclosure prevention) and financial education. Requirements: Bachelor’s (BS or BA) degree or significant equivalent experience with a minimum of four years related work experience in human services, financial industry, credit or collections.

Direct Support Professional Lutheran Social Service supports multiple individuals in residential homes across Minnesota. Direct Support Professionals support individuals living in these homes, with activities of daily living, including recreation. Must be compassionate, motivated, task oriented and flexible. Requirements: Must have a valid driver's license, the ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Record and Criminal Background check. Must also complete sponsored training for CPR/First Aid and Medication Administration Certification within 60 days of hire.

Direct Support Professional - Lead Support individuals living in Supported Living Services homes with activities of daily living while providing leadership to staff. This position requires the ability to analyze information, write reports, develop schedules communicate effectively with consumer representatives and provide leadership to staff. Requirements: Same as for Direct Support Position, with at least one year experience supporting persons with developmental disabilities.

Mental Health Professional Provide psychotherapy and mental health services to a varied caseload; Engage in community education and group presentations; Work as a member of a multidisciplinary team. Requirements: Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling or related field; License (LICSW) required; Licensed Psychologist preferred.

Mental Health Practitioner Provide counseling and life skills information to individuals, couples and families, usually, in their home. Requirements: Master’s degree in Social Work or related field and experience working with multi-problem families is required. Training/education in individual, marital and family therapy, and knowledge of the family based concept is a plus.

Senior Companion (Stipend Volunteer Position) Create and build a relationship with a client who is lonely and isolated. This relationship provides support to the client and has a positive direct impact on the client’s health and ability to live independently. Requirements: Men and women, age 60 and over, who are in good health and able to commit to 15+ hours a week.. Tax-free stipend, mileage reimbursement, liability insurance and training provided. Compassion, patience, flexibility and respect for others are important qualities in a Senior Companion. Age Requirement based on Federal guidelines.

Foster Grandparent (Stipend Volunteer Position) Create and build a relationship with a special needs child. This relationship helps nurture the child and provides adult support that makes a positive impact on the child’s educational, social & emotional development. Requirements: Men and women, age 60 and older who are in good health and able to commit to 15+ hours a week.. Tax-free stipend, mileage reimbursement, liability insurance and training provided. Compassion, patience, flexibility, and respect for children are important qualities in a Foster Grandparent. Age Requirements based on Federal Guidelines.

Youth Worker Youth Workers provide supervision, guidance, and care to youth who are living in a shelter or Group Home and help prepare them to transition back to their family, to a less restrictive setting or to living independently. Requirements: Bachelors Degree in Human Services or equivalent experience preferred.

Careers in Central Services

Central Services provides support and a strong infrastructure to the services LSS provides. Departments within Central Services are: Accounting and Finance, Advancement, Human Resources, Information Technology, Marketing and Communications and Property Management. The following is an overview of the responsibilities of each department. These positions are primarily located at our office in St. Paul (2485 Como Ave.), with a few exceptions.

Advancement Major positions in Advancement (also know as Development) are Major Gift Officers, Grant writer and Database Coordinator. Main function include contacting potential donors (individuals, foundations, corporations) to tell LSS’ story and request financial support for our Mission. Other positions include tracking information in a specialized database and providing reports. Partners with all Service areas in their fund raising needs.

Accounting Responsible for Accounts Receivables and Payables, Payroll processing and maintaining proper internal controls and audit requirements. This department functions according to Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures (GAAP). Accounting degree or at least two years of Accounting experience required, Individuals are expected to attention to detail, possess both analytical skills and excellent customer service skills.; . Some positions require supervisory experience. Individuals in this area partner with all departments to ensure quality payables and timely and accurate application of revenue.

Finance Responsible to provide direction and support to the management team in the management of business financials. Assists in revenue forecast, new business development and business planning. Business degree or experience required. Excellent analytical skills also required. Finance partners with all departments in financial analysis and management.

Human Resources Human Resources administers employee compensation and benefit programs and is responsible for compliance under all State and Federal mandates. HR supports the strategic direction of the organization through employee and organization development., performance management , and strategic staffing tools. HR partners with and consults with all departments in the organization and must have an understanding of the varying needs of the business lines.

Information Technology Responsible for development and maintenance of LAN computer network, software and hardware and troubleshooting problems (HelpDesk). A key player in software installation and conversions. Partners with all departments in their technology needs. Experience and education in computer and networks required.

Marketing and Communication Responsible for the development of online and hard copy materials that tell the LSS story. Also responsible for the coordination and placement of LSS stories in various media (Print, TV, Radio). Partners with all services on their communication needs. A background in Marketing, Journalism or Graphic Art is required.

Property Management Responsible for LSS owned or leased properties throughout the state in approximately 300 residential or office locations. Property Management partners with local directors and managers to ensure proper safety, maintenance and accessibility procedures are in place. Also negotiates new leases or sales and ensures insurance coverages are sufficient. Previous experience in property management or insurance required.
