Therapeutic Foster Care Support and Training


Treatment Foster Care SupportWe are committed to supporting foster families to ensure a positive and healthy environment for your family and the children being served.

The Therapeutic Foster Care program is administered by Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS); Minnesota's largest statewide, nonprofit social service organization. LSS Therapeutic Foster Care services are licensed through the Minnesota Department of Human Services and are accredited by the Council On Accreditation (COA).

LSS has a long history of providing safe homes for children through our Therapeutic Foster Care program. Our experienced staff will provide expertise and support during the challenging times and help you celebrate the successes. 

LSS is committed to providing support and training to ensure our foster parents have the tools necessary to create a positive and healthy environment for the children in their care through:

  • 24-hour Foster Care Coordinator support
  • Initial and ongoing training (some training programs have a fee; many are free or low-cost) 
  • In-home therapeutic support from a mental health practitioner/professional  

Required Training for Foster Families

All LSS Treatment Foster Care providers receive training in the following:

  • CPR / First Aid
  • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) / Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS)
  • Child passenger safety
  • Crisis prevention and intervention de-escalation
  • Culture and diversity
  • Medication management
  • State-mandated reporting

Specialized Training Opportunities

Each foster parent receives more than thirty hours of pre-placement training during the licensing process. LSS provides this specialized training at no cost to the foster families.

Ongoing Training

Continuing Education

Foster parents can receive continuing education credits by attending foster parent meetings and training sessions.

Community Training Opportunities

LSS Therapeutic Foster Care coordinators provide Information about upcoming classes provided in the community:

  • Mental health diagnoses / dual diagnoses in children and youth
  • Attachment / bonding
  • Trauma / development repair
  • Independent living skills
  • Development and monitoring of treatment plans
