INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION - Bulgaria

There are toddlers and children of both genders, generally up to age eight, along with sibling groups, waiting in several Bulgarian orphanages, where they receive good care. Per Bulgarian law, all children are offered to three Bulgarian families before becoming available for international adoption. Most children are of Roma or Turkish origin. Referrals are typically made shortly after submission of documents to Bulgaria. Adoptions are usually completed six to eight months later.

Adoptive Family Requirements
  • Married couples or single women.
  • Parents may be no older than age 50, depending upon child's age. (Some exceptions apply)
  • Parents may have other children if the adoptive child is age three or older; parents may not have other children if the adoptive child is under three years of age. (Some exceptions apply)
  • Parents are required to make one or two trips to Bulgaria. An escort may be available for older children.

Health histories, photographs and videotapes are provided for each child referred. An LSS representative in Bulgaria assists with the process in that country.
