Vietnam Adoption Process

Adoption Home Study
The first step in your journey to adopt a child from Vietnam is the completion of an Adoption Home Study, a written document that explains who you are and the significant experiences in your life. It also includes medical and financial information, references and criminal background information, as well as your motives for adoption. The home study must be completed in your state of residence.

Application
The Vietnam adoption application includes:

  • Application for Adoption from Vietnam
  • Memorandum of Commitment
  • Letter to The People’s Committee
  • Family Photo Page

Dossier
The dossier is a group of documents required to complete your adoption in Vietnam. Most of these documents will require State Certification, U.S. State Department Authentication, and Legalization by the Vietnam Embassy before they can be sent to the International Adoption Department of Vietnam’s Ministry of Justice in Hanoi.

Detailed instructions and letterhead documents will be provided to you when it is time to start your dossier. While you may desire to get a head-start on gathering this documentation, please keep in mind that documents expire according to the laws and practices of the country from which you plan to adopt. No country is more particular about the aging of documents than Vietnam. Your LSS adoption worker will instruct you when it is the appropriate time to begin compiling your dossier documents.

Referral
Once a specific child is referred to you, medical information, social history and a photograph will be provided for your review. You will have adequate time to seek medical opinion. Once officially accepting the child referral, a date will be set for your Giving & Receiving Ceremony (the legal transfer of care for the child from the orphanage to the family) and we will then assist you in making travel arrangements and prepare you for traveling to meet and bring home your new child.
